Know Before You Go

Being prepared for a doctor’s appointment will help anyone feel better, regardless of what it’s for; chronic pain is no different. At your first appointment for chronic pain treatment, you will receive a thorough evaluation so your doctor can figure out the root causes and the impact it has. Read below to see what happens during the evaluation.

  • Medical History & Pain Assessment- The first thing your doctor will do is ask about everything regarding the pain. How it started, how long it’s been going on, how intense it gets, and any other characteristics you can describe. Following that, you will then be asked about past medication, previous treatments (if any), and how the pain affects your daily routine.
  • Physical Exam- Your doctor will then conduct a physical exam to test for muscle tension, range of motion, swelling, or tenderness. A neurological test may also be performed.
  • If Needed, Diagnostic Exam- Your pain location and description will depend on whether the doctor sends you for a diagnostic exam. An MRT, a CT scan, or an X-ray will help your doctor get a better visualization of the pain-ridden area. Blood and nerve function tests may also be necessary to evaluate potential nerve damage or any underlying conditions.
  • Create a Plan- Once the evaluation has concluded, it will be time for you and your doctor to develop a chronic pain treatment plan that works for you. Treatment options may include physical therapy, medication, injections, or complementary therapies.
